Promising Seoul Industry Event Newcomers to Get Official City Backing

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Seoul Metropolitan Government has selected six new local conferences and exhibitions for a three-year financial support program designed to turn them into large-scale international-brand business events. The six events, each of which represents one of Seoul’s key industries, were chosen by a panel of judges as having strong potential to boost the city’s global brand as well as increase international awareness of Seoul’s meetings industry. Each year, the selected conferences will be reviewed by a panel, before being awarded 50 to 100 million won (USD $47, 178 – $94, 358) in support.

Seoul’s business events sector has for many years enjoyed strong official-level support, with the government identifying it as one of the city’s main growth industries. The new “2014 Domestic MICE Internationalization Support” program will support small-to-midsized events with the potential to become brands synonymous with Seoul, raise awareness of Korea’s capital overseas, contribute to economic growth and also job creation. They will also be able to showcase Seoul’s cutting-edge information and communications technology sector, powered by brands already well-known overseas.

mice-events-supportTo qualify for the program, event applicants were required to meet strict criteria in order to ensure their ability to grow in the long-term as future global events. Requirements for conferences included an attendance of at least 300 participants of whom 20% should hail from overseas, and run for a minimum of 3 days. Exhibition criteria meanwhile included event spaces of at least 3,000m², an attendance of no fewer than 100 participating companies of which 5% should be foreign, and the presence of at least 50 international buyers. The selected candidates will undergo an annual performance evaluation and be eligible for funding increases across the three-year program if given a favorable rating.

The six conferences chosen this year were:

  • 2014 International Meeting of Asia Forum for Aesthetic Surgery & Medicine (March 28-30)
  • Broadcast, Audio & Lighting Equipment Show (May 20-23)
  • Interbattery 2014 (October 14-16)
  • Food Week Korea 2014 (November 12-15)
  • Seoul International Café Show (November 20-23)
  • Korea Exhibition Expo (December 18-19)

Seoul also provides a wide range of support for international meetings held in the city, with subvention packages available depending on the size and duration of the event. This can include on- and off-site promotion of the meeting in Seoul plus promotional material issued to delegates, operational assistance through the Seoul Convention Supporters program, site inspections, and bidding support for local organizations seeking to attraction international congresses.
